In
1997, the City of Albuquerque adopted a new water
resources management strategy to ensure a sustainable water supply
over the long term. The strategy was based on hydrogeologic studies, extensive
public involvement and interaction with regulators and neighboring jurisdictions.
It includes the following policy directives:
- Develop and fully use San Juan-Chama water that we already own.
- Implement the Groundwater Protection Policy and Action Plan cooperatively
between Albuquerque and Bernalillo County.
- Establish a groundwater reserve for use in drought periods.
- Support regional water resources planning and management.
- Continue effective water
conservation policies and practices.
- Implement water use based on different levels of quality. For example,
use low-quality water, such as recycled water, for irrigation. Reserve
high quality water from the deep aquifer for domestic use and drinking.
- Seek new water supplies, keeping regional concerns in mind.
- Protect environmental
resources.
- Ensure water
rates reflect the cost of providing a safe and sustainable supply,
that the rate burden is fairly distributed and that conservation is
encouraged.
- Educate the public about water-resources
issues.
